A few hours in Lucerne & Interlaken

O

ur visit to Lucerne was quick, barely half a day, but it was enough for a good, first glimpse of such a beautiful, vibrant city. It’s a popular destination for tourists, you won’t be able to have any famous landmark to yourself.

This city wants you to relax, drink a Swiss hot chocolate and walk around to enjoy your surroundings

The city, part of the German-speaking portion, sits on the shores of Lake Lucerne and has a fairytale-ish beauty. The most famous landmark is Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke) is a covered wooden bridge for pedestrians, spanning the river Reuss diagonally. It was named after the nearby St. Peter’s Chapel, and once you walk in you can see the various interior paintings dating back to the 17th century. Many of them were destroyed with a big part of the bridge in a 1993 fire but were later restored. It is the oldest wooden covered bridge in Europe.

Walk back to the main square, the heart of the city, and keep your eyes up to see the beautiful murals on the houses’ facades. The themes of the paintings vary from the history of the market to the biblical Feast of Canaan and the details are fascinating.

This city wants you to relax, drink a Swiss hot chocolate and walk around to enjoy your surroundings. Even though the main square feels like a time travel, Lucerne still has everything from great chocolatiers to big stores for souvenirs.

Heading to Interlaken, you can’t not just sit back and enjoy the views outside your window. It’s a heaven of greens, lakes and small houses. Interlaken is a traditional resort town (or more like a tourist – theme park at this point) in the mountainous Bernese Oberland region, built on a narrow stretch of valley, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz – hence the name.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful town, though full of shops, hotels, cafés and restaurants. Also, this is a hotspot for skydiving, if you’re into it, you land right in the park.
